- Record keeping requirements are explicit or implicit in several federal and local laws. Some of these laws are American with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), among many others. The record keeping requirements include the types of record and the length of time to be retained.

- Manual personnel record system, which is the most common system use by the companies. Although some companies are moving toward “paperless”, in which no papers copies of records are maintained. However, for most companies, that practice is years away and they are moving toward an electronically stored system.
- Human Resources Information System (HRIS) is the most actual system in process to be used by all types of organizations. The big advantage of this system is efficiency, also data reporting is easier.
